What is IPS?
An IPS (Intrustion Prevention System) is a Network Security device that sits logically outside of your network and monitors traffic coming inward for malicious activity. Generally, the main responsibilities of an IPS are to identify malcious activity, keep a record of it, attempt to thwart it, and finally to alert a human to the activity.
What is EPS?
An EPS (Extrusion Prevention System) has an opposite purpose. The duty of an EPS is to ensure that your network is not being used by some individual, or organization to distribute malicious software to others outside of your network.
How are these technologies different from a Firewall?
One key difference between Intrusion Prevention Systems and Firewalls, is that Firewalls, basically, are port based blockage systems. They allow you to block network traffic coming into, or out of, a certain port. They are very important, but not expecially intelligent. IPS and EPS systems have the ability to match data based on a varity of patterns, rules, and criteria to ensure adequate protection. Also, an IPS has the ability to "cloak" your machine, making your network invisible to evil doers, while allowing legitmate traffic to flow freely.
