Software as a Service (SaaS)

SaaS (Software as a Service) refers to applications which are hosted remotely, and accessed over a network, such as the Internet. You are likely to hear this term very often as time goes on, as it brings one of the key features of Cloud Computing to the fore. A commonly used example of a SaaS application is web-email. You use what is referred to as a thin (or dumb) client, your web browser, to access a very functional and useful application, email. This is SaaS in action.

How SaaS differs from traditional software legally

Typically, when the user acquires software, they pay a one-time fee, and then use the software from that point on in ownership of it. With SaaS, the model is a bit different. Normally a subscription is utilized. In some cases, the subscription is free, and merely entails signing up (like web mail), in other cases a fee is paid on a regular basis.

What can SaaS be used for?

One exciting new arena opening up in technology is cloud computing. With the promise of "own less, do more", companies are finding it to be a very attractive solution to lessen costs and increase productivity.

Recently, Microsoft previewed its new cloud offering, Microsoft Office 365. Like web-mail, this promises to let your organization access all of its critical data and applications anywhere, anytime; all that is required is an internet connection.

Imagine being able to collaborate in real time with coworkers, no matter where you are. The promise of bringing your office anywhere becomes reality with Microsoft Office 365

Primary Advantages

  • Reduced upfront costs - The user pays a nominal subscription fee compared to a large one time fee.
  • Less hardware ownership and maintenance - Servers are typically owned and maintained by the Cloud/SaaS service provider. The headaches of dealing with them are no longers yours to bear.
  • Less support staff needed - Along with less hardware ownership comes with it less need of support personnel. These matters, again, are handled by the provider
